Now … I don’t have a lot of time for idle reading at this point in my life. I have to confess I’ve only read a handful of the stories at this site … but one of my favorites is the latest by Jane Lebak, titled “Damage.”
I first ran across Jane in writing circles about, oh, two or three years ago. But she and I had met before–in an online support group for mothers who had endured the loss of a baby and were trying to find their way emotionally through a subsequent pregnancy. I remembered her wry wit in the midst of our shared joy and grief, and that same wit shines in so many of her stories … but in this one, she gives the reader a glimpse into a very personal grief and anguish … and yet speculates on what God might–maybe–have intended in allowing her own dear baby to be born with anencephaly.
Beautiful, Jane. Just beautiful.
Jane also took second place in the recent short fiction contest sponsored by DKA … so be sure to look for that.

I’ve read “Damage” twice–once as an editor (and the only one with a minor criticism, cause, hey, I’m brutal); once just as a reader–and both times I just bawled. Jane done good.

Excellent post, Shannon. You have such a great way of personalizing these features. Makes me want to see them just because of that.
